Palo Santo: The Sacred Wood of South America

At Enchanted Crystals, we proudly carry ethically sourced Palo Santo, harvested with respect for both nature and tradition.

Palo Santo, meaning “Holy Wood” in Spanish, comes from the Bursera graveolens tree, which grows naturally in parts of Peru, Ecuador, and other regions of South America. For generations, Indigenous communities have used Palo Santo during ceremonies, meditation, prayer, and spiritual practices to create a peaceful atmosphere and prepare a space for reflection.

Ethically Sourced Matters

Authentic Palo Santo should never come from living trees. Ethical harvesting means the wood is collected only after trees have naturally fallen and remained on the forest floor for several years. During this time, the wood develops the rich aromatic oils that give Palo Santo its distinctive fragrance.

Choosing ethically sourced Palo Santo helps support sustainable forestry practices while protecting these remarkable trees and the ecosystems they call home.

How to Use Palo Santo

Light one end of the stick until a small flame appears. Allow it to burn for about 30 seconds to one minute, then gently blow out the flame. The stick will produce a fragrant stream of smoke.

Move through your home, workspace, or meditation area, allowing the smoke to drift into the space. Many people enjoy setting an intention while using Palo Santo, whether it is to create a sense of calm, focus, gratitude, or renewal.

When finished, place the stick in a fire safe dish until it naturally goes out.

What Does Science Say?

Palo Santo contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds, including limonene and α terpineol, which are also found in citrus peels and many aromatic plants.

Research has shown that limonene possesses antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti inflammatory properties in laboratory studies. While these findings are promising, there is currently no strong scientific evidence that burning Palo Santo “cleanses negative energy” or purifies indoor air in the way it is sometimes advertised.

Many people do find that its pleasant aroma promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and a calming environment. Creating moments of intentional stillness and reducing stress can have meaningful benefits for overall well being.

A Tradition of Intention

Whether you use Palo Santo during meditation, before yoga, after a long day, or simply because you enjoy its warm, woodsy fragrance with hints of citrus, it serves as a beautiful reminder to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the present moment.

Respect the tradition. Honor the forest. Enjoy the ritual.
