Lapis Lazuli

Mohs Hardness: 5–5.5

History & Origins

Lapis Lazuli has been treasured for over 6,000 years and is one of humanity’s oldest revered gemstones. Ancient civilizations in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the Indus Valley valued it as a stone of wisdom, royalty, and divine connection.

The finest Lapis Lazuli has traditionally come from the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan, where it has been mined for thousands of years. It is also found in Chile, Russia, Pakistan, Myanmar, and the United States.

The ancient Egyptians carved Lapis into amulets, jewelry, and scarabs. It was closely associated with Isis and was believed to connect the wearer with higher wisdom and protection. Cleopatra is said to have worn Lapis jewelry, and the stone was even ground into the brilliant blue pigment known as ultramarine, once more valuable than gold.
